In a provident fund the employee pays part of basic salary every month and the company usually pays an equal amount. At year-end the fund's interest or profit from its investments is credited to members. This calculator takes basic salary, contribution rates, the fund's return and annual salary growth and shows contributions, interest and the closing balance for each year.
How it calculates: full-year interest on each year's opening balance, plus about half a year's interest on that year's new contributions, since they arrive monthly. In a real fund the trustees set the rate each year, so the result is an estimate.
Which rates to use
- Contribution rates: as set in your fund's trust deed or company policy; recognised funds must stay within Income Tax Act limits
- Interest / return: close to the rates the fund declared in the last two or three years
- Salary growth: your company's usual annual increment
What you get if you leave
Your own contributions and their interest are always yours. Whether you get all of the employer share depends on the trust deed's vesting rules, for example the full amount after a minimum number of years and part or nothing before that. The calculator's total includes both shares; on leaving, the employer share may be reduced under those rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do PF loans affect this?
A loan reduces the balance and is repaid with instalments. While the money is out, the fund earns less on it. Loans are not included in this calculator.
Is PF interest taxable?
Recognised provident funds have tax benefits set out in the Income Tax Act. Check the current law, or ask at tax.eomsbd.com.
