Audit preparation means getting the books, schedules and supporting documents in order before the auditor starts. We clean up the trial balance, reconcile the banks and send balance confirmations, build a schedule for each note, collect every document on the auditor's requisition list and answer queries during the audit.
Our team has sat on the audit firm's side of the table: audit planning checklists, audit programmes, requisition letters to clients and balance confirmation letters. So we know which documents auditors ask for first and where audits get stuck.

What auditors usually ask for
- Last year's audited statements, this year's trial balance and draft statements
- Twelve months of statements and year-end balance certificates for every bank
- Declarations on cash in hand, litigation, money laundering and going concern; management representation letter
- Bank, payable and receivable balance confirmations
- Note-wise documents: asset purchase invoices, tax deducted at source challans, party-wise sales and purchases, VAT returns, payroll sheets, LC documents
- Memorandum and articles, board minutes, proof of share capital deposits
Where audits get stuck
| Problem | What we do |
|---|---|
| Books do not agree with the bank statements | Monthly reconciliation of every account and explanations for differences |
| No proof that share capital was deposited through the bank | Trace bank records; if not found, warn management early |
| Sales in the VAT returns differ from the books | Month-by-month reconciliation and a list of differences |
| No reply to balance confirmations | Send letters and follow up; if no reply, alternative evidence (later payments, invoices) |
| No fixed asset register | Fixed asset register and verification |

Our role and the auditor's are separate
We work for the company: we prepare the books, schedules, evidence and explanations. The auditor independently tests them and gives an opinion. If you have your own auditor, we work with them. If not, our ICAB-registered partner firm does the audit. Under independence rules, the same firm never prepares the books and audits them.
How it works
- PlanCheck document status against your auditor's requisition letter (or our checklist).
- Clean upTrial balance, reconciliations and adjustments.
- SchedulesLead sheet and supporting schedule for each note.
- ConfirmationsSend bank, payable and receivable confirmations and follow up.
- During the auditAnswer queries, provide extra documents and post final adjustments.
Frequently asked questions
How early should we bring you in?
At least a month before year-end, so the count, confirmations and cut-off can be planned. We can also start later, but some evidence is harder to collect after the fact.
What if our auditor objects?
Auditors are usually glad, because organised documents save them time. We only prepare on the company's side; audit decisions stay with the auditor.
Is this for small companies too?
Yes. Small companies have fewer documents, but audits get stuck for the same reasons. Start with the checklist and call us if you need help.
